The BNSS is the new law that replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1973. It came into force on 1 July 2024. It applies to the whole of India except Jammu & Kashmir (which has its own separate criminal procedure law).

Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 · Section 1

(1) This Act may be called the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. (2) It extends to the whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir. (3) It shall come into force on such date as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint, and different dates may be appointed for different provisions of this Sanhita.
