The BNS is the new criminal law of India that replaced the Indian Penal Code, 1860. It came into force on 1 July 2024. It applies across all of India. The name "Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita" translates to "Indian Justice Code."

Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 · Section 1

(1) This Act may be called the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. (2) It extends to the whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir. (3) It shall come into force on such date as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.
