Our Purpose
Vision & Mission
Why we practice law the way we do. The beliefs that shaped this firm from its first instruction, and the principles that continue to guide every client engagement today.
Our Vision
"To be the most trusted corporate law firm for businesses building and operating in India — known not for our size, but for the uncompromising quality of our counsel and the depth of our client relationships."
When the founding partners established Corpus Juris Legal as a unit of Unified Chambers & Associates, they were not trying to build the largest corporate law firm in Delhi. They were trying to build the most trusted one — a distinction that matters more than scale when a company is deciding which lawyer to call on the most consequential day of its corporate life.
Trust, in our context, means something specific. It means that when a client calls us at 10 pm before a board meeting, they are speaking to a partner who knows their company. It means that when we advise against a transaction, the client knows we are not protecting a fee — we are protecting their interests. It means that our legal opinions are ones a judge, a regulator, or a counterparty would respect, not ones crafted to please the client in the moment.
This is the standard we hold ourselves to. It is why 98% of our clients return for their next matter, and why many of our longest relationships are with clients who first came to us in crisis and stayed because of how we handled it.
Our Mission
What We Are Here to Do
To provide partner-led, commercially intelligent legal counsel to businesses — from the day they are incorporated to the day they are listed, acquired, or resolved. To be the firm they call first, and the firm whose advice they act on.
01
Partner-Led Service Delivery
Every engagement is owned by a named equity partner who provides direct legal counsel from instruction to resolution. No matter reaches a client without a partner's review.
02
Specialist Depth, Not Generalist Coverage
Our 18 practice areas are each anchored by a specialist with deep sector knowledge. We do not take on work outside our areas of genuine expertise.
03
Commercial Alignment
We structure our advice around business outcomes — understanding the commercial objective before applying the legal framework. Good law that misunderstands the business is not good advice.
04
Transparent, Predictable Fees
All fees are agreed in writing before work commences. We do not issue unexpected invoices. Scope changes are renegotiated openly before additional costs are incurred.
05
Long-Term Relationships Over Transactional Volume
We measure success by retention rates and long-term relationships — not by the number of mandates onboarded. 98% of our clients return for their next matter.
06
Access to Broader Chambers Resources
As a unit of Unified Chambers & Associates, our clients can access specialist counsel across areas beyond our corporate mandate — without starting a new relationship from scratch.
Core Values
The Values That Guide Our Practice
These are not aspirational statements for a website. They are the actual standards against which our partners and associates evaluate every piece of work before it leaves this office. They are why clients come back.
Integrity
We give honest advice — even when it is not the answer a client wants. Our role is not to validate decisions already made; it is to protect our clients' interests with candour, even at the cost of short-term comfort. If a transaction is risky, we say so. If a position is legally untenable, we will not dress it up. This is the only way we know how to practice law.
Excellence
Every document we produce, every argument we make in court, every memorandum we deliver is reviewed against a single question: would we be proud to have this read by the Supreme Court, the NCLT, or a counterparty of the highest sophistication tomorrow? Mediocrity has no place in our practice. We revise until the work is right — not until the deadline forces it out.
Accountability
A named partner is personally accountable for every matter this firm handles. Not a team. Not a system. A partner. When you call with an update request, a partner answers. When something goes wrong, a partner explains. Accountability at Corpus Juris Legal is not distributed — it is personal, direct, and non-negotiable.
Clarity
Legal complexity does not require linguistic complexity. We believe our job is to reduce ambiguity, not amplify it. We write in plain, precise English. We explain Indian law in terms that a CFO, a board member, or a founder can act on — without sacrificing the legal accuracy that our courts demand. If we need three paragraphs to say something clearly, we will not stretch it to ten.
Respect for Time
Our clients run businesses. Every hour a legal matter is unresolved is an hour of commercial uncertainty. We set realistic timelines and we keep them. When circumstances change a deadline, we communicate proactively — not after the fact. Responsiveness is not a differentiator for us; it is a baseline expectation we hold ourselves to every day.
Independence
We do not allow our commercial relationships — with clients, counterparties, or referral sources — to compromise the independence of our advice. We will decline instructions where our independence cannot be guaranteed, and we will recuse ourselves from matters where a conflict arises. Our advice is always our genuine legal opinion, not the one most likely to preserve a fee relationship.
Our Commitment
Excellence Is Not Optional
Legal excellence at Corpus Juris Legal is not a branding position — it is an operational standard. It is enforced through a peer review process on all transactional documents, mandatory partner sign-off on all client opinions, and a firm-wide culture that treats average work as unacceptable, regardless of the fee size or client seniority.
We invest significantly in the professional development of every lawyer in the firm. This includes structured training on new legislation (every major statutory change is analysed and distributed firm-wide within 48 hours), participation in bar council CPD programmes, and regular knowledge-sharing sessions across practice groups.
Our associates are not expected to produce perfect work from day one — they are expected to ask when uncertain, to revise when told, and to understand why the standard is high. Over time, this creates lawyers whose instinct for quality is internalized rather than imposed.
The result is a firm that a client can trust not just with their current matter, but with their company's legal affairs over the long arc of its commercial life. That is the only kind of firm we want to be.
