The Indian Penal Code, 1860

This act has been repealed and replaced by Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. It may still be referenced in ongoing matters. This reference is maintained for academic and archival purposes.

The Indian Penal Code was the comprehensive criminal code of India from 1862 until its replacement by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in July 2024. Drafted by the First Law Commission chaired by Lord Macaulay, the IPC defined over 511 offences ranging from minor to capital. Despite repeal, IPC continues to apply to offences committed before 1 July 2024.
