The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999

Provides for the registration and better protection of geographical indications relating to goods originating from a definite geographical territory, where quality, reputation, or other characteristics are attributable to their geographical origin. Notable Indian GIs include Darjeeling Tea, Basmati Rice, Kanchipuram Silk, and Kolhapuri Chappal.
